Jaspects – The Album that Kanye wanted to make
When I listen to an album one of the things that I do is try to find some familiarity with the music. Some common ground something that reminds of something but when you stumble upon an album that does not do that you find yourself truly listening. And I believe that when an artist who is in tune with their art produces music that can’t be “labeled” then they truly become an artist. Now just because you can’t label it doesn’t mean that it’s good let’s be honest there is a lot music considered “experimental” that is straight noise. Very few artists can take various genres of music and add them to an album and make it work let alone take those same genres and add them to one song and create a beautiful mixture of aural lemonade. Jaspects is one of those groups that has been able to capture sounds that most would say do not work and make it all make sense.
Their new album The Polkadotted Stripe is so unique that you will have a hard time trying to put in any particular slot. I have a partner who is an amazing producer, what up Ronnie Cee , one of the things we talk about all the time is that a lot of producers have a tendency to create music without understanding that every voice, every instrument and every element in a song must serve a purpose. It’s like a conversation if we all talk at the same time it sounds like noise but if we have conversation then it’s a beautiful thing.
One of the tracks on the album “UNIFUNK” is one of those types of records where at first you think you’re listening to your basic dance record as the song builds up your taken on a funky trip with horns and claps and yells. Unifunk has a, dare I say, “old school” house feel but it still sounds fresh and new. On a “LIKE A DRUM” I imagine that this is what the type of record that Kanye wanted to make be settled on “Love Lockdown” which is not necessarily a bad thing it’s just that Drum has elements of rock, dance, new wave and drum & bass but it works. Where we left wanted to really see what Kanye could do with Love Lockdown Drum says hey this is what he could have done. But for an amazing twist check the insanely witty “CHUCK JONES” which starts off the looney tunes theme music and before you know it takes an quick turn own a dark alley and takes you on a trip through a place that most groups refuse to go but again we are talking about true artist.
The album features guest appearances from P.J. Morton mainstay of the underground soul movement and Chantae Cann a sweet voiced angel that brings such an amazing texture to the album with “FIND MY WAY TO LOVE”. There is also an appearance buy the wonderfully strange Janelle Monae which sets off the tone of the album with “2012”. Over all if you are a fan of just great music regardless of style then this album will be sure to please be sure to cop it.
